New Label Alert | Alasdair
Like many women in New York City, April Johnson, the founder of the fashion line Alasdair, can go on and on about the hours she’s spent searching for “the perfect jacket, the perfect shirt, the perfect dress.” At a certain point, after failing to find these well-designed staples in stores, Johnson, a former fashion stylist, began making them herself. That led to requests for copies from friends and then orders from local boutiques like Steven Alan, Bird and French Garment Cleaners Co.
For spring, Alasdair’s second season, Johnson has repeated many of the loose-fitting, easily adaptable silhouettes from her first collection, including a wrap dress with a sexy, plunging neckline and a pair of drapey legging trousers. She’s also added new pieces like a sweatshirt-style top with a sheer, gathered back. The silks and cotton gauzes are highly tactile, and the colors — like saturated navy or an intense mustard — seem striking without compromising on big-city sophistication. “This is a real New York girl’s uniform,” Johnson says.
